ONDO EXPANDS DIGITAL EDUCATION TO 50 PUBLIC SCHOOLS, TRAINS TEACHERS FOR TECH-DRIVEN LEARNING


The Ondo State Government has commenced the digitalisation of secondary education, with teachers and students across the state participating in ongoing training aimed at preparing schools for a technology-driven learning environment.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, disclosed this on Friday in Akure during the grand finale of the fourth edition of the Digital Quiz Competition for secondary schools.

The competition was organised by the Ondo State Government in partnership with Quickens Computer Limited, an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) firm.

Ajibefun said the state government is making significant investments in digital education by equipping teachers with modern ICT skills, which they are expected to pass on to students in their respective schools.

According to him, the digital training programme is an ongoing initiative that began last year and is designed to prepare the state's education system for full digital transformation.

He revealed that ICT teachers in public secondary schools recently underwent a week-long intensive digital education training facilitated by the ministry and its technical partners.

The commissioner also announced that digital equipment has been distributed to 50 public secondary schools across the state through one of the government's technical partners.

He noted that the provision of computers and other digital learning tools is part of efforts to strengthen ICT-based teaching and learning in public schools.

Speaking on the Digital Quiz Competition, Ajibefun said the initiative was introduced to promote digital literacy, encourage academic excellence, and equip students with the technological skills required to thrive in the 21st century.

He added that the government believes technology, innovation, and digital knowledge are essential tools for national development and future economic growth.

Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Akindele Ige, described the competition as more than an academic exercise, saying it provides students with opportunities to develop critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and digital literacy.

He said the initiative aligns with the state's commitment to preparing young learners for success in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Schools that participated in the competition included Fiwasaye Girls' Secondary School, Akure; Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure; Greater Tomorrow Secondary School, Arigidi Akoko, and several other public secondary schools across the state.

The digital education initiative forms part of the Ondo State Government's broader efforts to modernise the education sector and improve students' readiness for future academic and career opportunities.
