TINUBU APPROVES LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY RECONSTRUCTION, EXPANDS MAJOR HIGHWAY PROJECTS


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway using reinforced concrete pavement as part of fresh infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving Nigeria's road network.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during a media briefing in Abuja. He also revealed that the President approved the extension of the Fourth Legacy Highway by an additional 400 kilometres, increasing its total length from about 700 kilometres to approximately 1,100 kilometres.

According to Umahi, the expanded highway will extend into Taraba State, strengthening connectivity between the North-Central and North-East regions while passing through several notable communities.

The minister also disclosed that President Tinubu approved the completion of the abandoned Ibi Bridge project in Taraba State, which was awarded in 2018 but stalled after reaching about 40 per cent completion. Approval was equally granted for the construction of the 5.76-kilometre Lau Bridge across the Benue River.

In addition, the Federal Government approved the dualisation of another 400 kilometres of the East-West Road corridor stretching from Lokoja to Benin to improve transportation, trade and road safety.

Speaking on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Umahi said the decision to reconstruct the highway with reinforced concrete followed the deterioration of sections of the road less than five years after rehabilitation.

He explained that reinforced concrete pavement offers a more durable alternative to asphalt and is expected to last between 50 and 100 years with minimal maintenance.

The minister further announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has been officially named the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway by the Ministry of Works in recognition of the President's long-standing vision for the project.

Providing updates on the 750-kilometre coastal highway, Umahi said construction is progressing across multiple sections. He disclosed that the first section from Victoria Island to Eleko Village in Lagos is advancing steadily, while the second section towards the Lagos-Ogun boundary has reached about 60 per cent completion.

He added that work is also ongoing on sections of the project in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Ondo states.

Umahi also provided updates on the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway and the Trans-Sahara Highway, noting that both projects are progressing and are expected to significantly improve connectivity, reduce travel time and stimulate economic growth across the country.

The Federal Government's Legacy Projects include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, Trans-Sahara Highway and the Akwanga-Maiduguri Highway, all designed to enhance national integration and support economic development under the Tinubu administration's Renewed Hope Agenda.
