TWO DIE, TWO HOSPITALISED AFTER SUSPECTED NITROUS OXIDE ABUSE IN OGUN


Two persons have died while two others are receiving medical treatment following a suspected drug-related incident in Isara Remo, Ogun State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at Oke-Ola Phase II, where four individuals allegedly consumed a substance believed to be nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas." The substance, which has legitimate medical uses as an anaesthetic, can pose serious health risks when misused recreationally.

According to community sources, the victims are believed to be students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade. However, authorities have not officially confirmed their identities or their affiliation with the institution.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the victims allegedly consumed the substance together, resulting in the deaths of two of them, while the remaining two were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command had launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case.



He stated that the two deceased persons had been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, while the survivors were receiving medical care. He added that investigations were ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Babaseyi also warned members of the public, particularly young people, against drug abuse and the use of illicit substances due to their potentially life-threatening consequences.

Efforts to obtain a response from the management of Gateway ICT Polytechnic were unsuccessful, as calls to the institution's Public Relations Officer, Folorunso Adedayo, were not answered, and messages sent via WhatsApp had not been responded to as of the time of filing the report.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid the misuse of drugs and to seek medical attention immediately in cases of suspected substance abuse.
