KWANKWASO CALLS FOR RENEWED NORTH–SOUTH-EAST ALLIANCE AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTION


Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has called for renewed political cooperation between Northern Nigeria and the South-East, saying the two regions have a longstanding history of working together that should be revived.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Igbo published on Wednesday, Kwankwaso stressed the need for reconciliation, forgiveness, and national unity, arguing that political leaders should build bridges rather than deepen divisions.

He said Nigerians must embrace the spirit of forgiveness, recalling how leaders after the Nigerian Civil War pursued policies of reconciliation and inclusion.

"We have to forgive ourselves. We have to work together as a family. The South-East has been our ally, our friends, over the years," Kwankwaso said.

The former Kano governor pointed to the First Republic, when the Northern People's Congress (NPC) formed a political alliance with the National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC) led by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. He also referenced the Second Republic, noting that President Shehu Shagari and leaders of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) maintained close political ties with leaders from the South-East.

According to him, the return to democratic rule after the Civil War demonstrated the country's commitment to reconciliation, with political leaders encouraging national integration instead of division.

Kwankwaso recalled that the alliance eventually produced the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme as Nigeria's Vice President, describing him as a trusted friend of Northern Nigeria. He also remembered attending Ekwueme's burial in Oko, Anambra State.

He further cited the return of the late Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, from exile, saying Northern political leaders at the time supported his reintegration into national politics by facilitating his return to Nigeria, where he later contested for a Senate seat.

Kwankwaso maintained that no region can successfully pursue national politics in isolation, adding that cooperation among Nigeria's diverse ethnic and religious groups remains essential for sustainable democracy.

He clarified that strengthening political ties with the South-East should not be interpreted as hostility towards the South-West or any other region.

"We are happy that we in the North have decided to go back to history and work with the South-East. That is not to say we are fighting the South-West or any other zone. We are all friends," he said.

He also noted that politics at the national level cannot be driven solely by regional, ethnic, or religious considerations.

The remarks come as political parties continue consultations and strategic realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with Kwankwaso serving as the running mate to former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi on the NDC ticket.
