MYSTERIOUS SULPHUR-LIKE ODOUR SPARKS CONCERN ACROSS PARTS OF AKURE

Residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital, have raised concerns over a persistent offensive odour, described by many as sulphur-like, which has reportedly been noticed in several communities across the city for more than two months.

According to accounts from residents, the unusual smell has been experienced intermittently since May 2026 in areas including Leo Junction, Oba-Ile Extension and Shagari Village. Those affected said the odour has become a source of worry due to uncertainty about its origin and any potential health implications.

Some residents said the smell is more noticeable at certain times, particularly at night, while others described it as strong and unpleasant. They noted that despite its recurring nature, its exact source remains unknown.

Residents who spoke on the development said they could not determine whether the odour originated from industrial activities, waste disposal sites, sewage systems, underground gas emissions or another environmental source. They stressed that only a proper scientific investigation could establish its cause.

The reports, gathered from different parts of the metropolis, suggest the incident is not limited to a single neighbourhood, with several residents giving similar accounts of experiencing the mysterious smell.

Concerned residents have appealed to the Ondo State Government and the Ministry of Environment to urgently investigate the situation. They called for air-quality assessments, environmental monitoring and the deployment of experts to identify the source of the odour and determine whether it poses any risk to public health.

They also urged the authorities to make the outcome of any investigation public in order to reassure residents and provide accurate information on the situation.

Environmental experts generally note that persistent or unusual odours can result from various sources, including industrial emissions, waste management activities, sewage systems, chemical releases and natural environmental processes. However, the actual cause of the reported odour in Akure has not been officially established.

As of the time of reporting, no official statement had been issued identifying the source of the smell. Residents have continued to call for prompt government action, saying an early investigation would help determine whether the air quality poses any health or environmental concerns.
