APM EXPRESSES CONFIDENCE IN MAKINDE'S 2027 PRESIDENTIAL BID, APC DISAGREES


The Allied People's Movement (APM) has expressed confidence that its presidential candidate and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has the capacity to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

The declaration comes amid growing political activities and realignments ahead of the next general election following Makinde's emergence as the APM presidential candidate after his political alliance with the party.

Speaking on the development, the APM National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, said the party believes Makinde possesses the leadership qualities, administrative experience, and national appeal needed to lead Nigeria.

According to Yusuf, the party has intensified grassroots mobilisation across the country and has witnessed an increase in membership following the defection of notable political figures.

He stated that Makinde's record in Oyo State demonstrates prudent management of public resources, responsible governance, and inclusive leadership. Yusuf added that the governor's experience and ability to connect with Nigerians across political, ethnic, and religious divides give the party confidence ahead of the 2027 election.

The APM also argued that many Nigerians are concerned about the rising cost of living, insecurity, unemployment, and declining economic opportunities, maintaining that the party is presenting what it described as a credible alternative.

However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the claims, insisting that President Tinubu remains well-positioned for re-election.

Reacting to the APM's position, APC Director of Publicity Bala Ibrahim said opposition parties have the constitutional right to present candidates but argued that Makinde does not pose a significant electoral challenge to the President.

Ibrahim maintained that the Tinubu administration's economic reforms, though initially criticised, are beginning to produce positive outcomes that Nigerians will appreciate before the 2027 polls.

He also stressed that serving governors seeking higher political office would be expected to account for their stewardship after leaving office.

According to him, Makinde's electoral achievements cannot be compared with President Tinubu's broader national political influence, expressing confidence that Nigerians would renew Tinubu's mandate in 2027.

Governor Makinde formally aligned with the APM in May 2026 after forging a political alliance with the party in Ibadan and subsequently emerged as its presidential candidate, positioning the party among opposition platforms preparing for the next presidential election.
