NBA URGES LAWYERS TO KEEP VOTING AS 2026 NATIONAL ELECTION ENDS SUNDAY MORNING


The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has urged eligible lawyers across the country to continue participating in its 2026 national elections, reminding members that voting will remain open until 7:35 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

In a statement shared on its official X account on Saturday, the association said the electronic voting process began at 7:35 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, and is scheduled to run for 24 hours.

The NBA encouraged members not to wait until the final hours before casting their votes, stressing the importance of broad participation in determining the association's leadership.

"Every eligible lawyer has the opportunity to shape the future of our association. Don't wait until the last minute. Cast your vote today and make your voice count," the association stated.

The reminder comes as the race for the NBA presidency remains closely watched.

As of 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, results published on the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) portal showed Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya (SAN) leading the contest with 10,554 votes, representing 46.16 percent of votes counted.

Her closest challenger, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe (SAN), had secured 7,020 votes, while Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro (SAN) polled 5,289 votes.

Meanwhile, Akangbe raised concerns over the conduct of the election, alleging that some lawyers, including himself, experienced difficulties accessing the voting platform.

In a statement posted on X, he said he had received reports from lawyers nationwide who were unable to vote due to technical challenges. He also claimed that the voting system allowed multiple voting, an allegation that had not been independently verified.

Despite his concerns, Akangbe urged members not to abandon the electoral process and encouraged them to continue attempting to cast their votes before the deadline.

Earlier, NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN) dismissed allegations of interference in the election, maintaining that the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association operates independently and that he has no role in influencing the outcome of the poll.

The NBA is expected to announce the official outcome of the election after voting closes and the final collation of results is completed.
