SECURITY FORCES CRUSH KIDNAP GANG, RESCUE ALL ABDUCTED OYO PUPILS AND TEACHERS; EIGHT SUSPECTS ARRESTED


All the pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom following a coordinated rescue operation by Nigerian security agencies, the Presidency has confirmed.

The announcement was made on Friday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement shared via his official X account.

According to Onanuga, the rescue operation resulted in the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers, who are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), while several other members of the criminal gang were neutralised during the operation.

"Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by our security agencies," Onanuga wrote.

The presidential spokesman also dismissed reports suggesting that the Federal Government secured the victims' release by negotiating with the kidnappers.

He clarified that there was no exchange or concession, noting that one of the alleged kingpins whose release was reportedly demanded by the abductors remains in custody and is facing prosecution.

"In the course of the rescue operation, eight of the kidnappers were arrested and are now in DSS custody, while some of them were neutralised. There was no quid pro quo in the rescue as one of the terrorists, a kingpin, that the kidnappers demanded his release, is being prosecuted for his atrocities," he stated.

Onanuga added that the relevant security agencies would provide a detailed account of the rescue operation in due course.

The successful operation brings an end to the victims' ordeal and has been welcomed by many Nigerians, following widespread concern over the safety of students, teachers, and communities affected by kidnapping incidents.
