NIGERIA JOINS GLOBAL PASSPORT VERIFICATION SYSTEM, ENDS INTERNATIONAL AUTHENTICATION CHALLENGES


Nigeria has successfully integrated its electronic passport verification system into the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD), a development expected to eliminate passport authentication issues previously experienced by some Nigerian travellers at foreign borders.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced on Wednesday that all of Nigeria's Country Signing Certificate Authorities (CSCAs) have been successfully imported into the ICAO Public Key Directory, enabling border control authorities in ICAO member states to seamlessly verify the authenticity of Nigerian electronic passports.

The process was completed by the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, during a ceremony at the ICAO headquarters in Montreal, Canada.

According to a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the successful integration establishes the required chain of trust for Nigeria's electronic passports within the global passport authentication system.

With this development, Nigerian passport holders are expected to experience smoother processing at international airports, reducing delays, secondary screening, and other verification challenges that previously occurred when foreign immigration systems could not automatically authenticate the embedded chips in Nigerian e-passports.

The ICAO Public Key Directory serves as the international platform through which participating countries exchange the cryptographic certificates used to verify the authenticity of electronic passports. Countries not connected to the system may encounter authentication limitations at border control checkpoints.

The Nigeria Immigration Service noted that the authentication gap had contributed to difficulties experienced by some Nigerian travellers at airports across Europe, North America, and other parts of the world.

The Service also credited the Federal Ministry of Interior, under the leadership of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for coordinating the exercise, describing it as part of the Federal Government's efforts to strengthen secure digital identity management and enhance international border security cooperation.

The successful integration is expected to improve the global recognition and verification of Nigerian electronic passports while aligning the country's passport infrastructure with international aviation and border security standards.
