NORTHERN YOUTH COUNCIL DEMANDS INDEPENDENT PROBE INTO MARY HABILA'S DEATH


The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the death of 26-year-old physiotherapist, Mary Habila, urging security agencies to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its National President, Isah Abubakar, the council expressed concern over the circumstances of Habila's death and called for an independent forensic autopsy capable of inspiring public confidence.

According to the group, a scientific and transparent investigation is necessary to determine the precise cause of death and ensure justice.

The council acknowledged the public support of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, for an autopsy but maintained that the entire process should be conducted independently and transparently to avoid doubts about the outcome.

The group also urged the Nigeria Police Force to carry out a comprehensive investigation and ensure that anyone found responsible is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

In addition, the NYCN called for the suspension of the minister pending the outcome of the investigation. It warned that it would mobilise its members and other civil society organisations for nationwide protests if its demands for what it described as a credible investigation are not addressed within seven days.

The council stressed that justice and accountability must be upheld while urging authorities to ensure that the investigation proceeds without interference.

Meanwhile, legal representatives of Senator Umahi have formally requested the Ebonyi State Police Command to conduct a comprehensive forensic autopsy before Habila's body is released for burial.

In a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police, the legal team said the request was intended to preserve the integrity of the investigation, establish the true cause of death, and ensure transparency.

The lawyers clarified that Habila was staying in accommodation designated for staff members and associates, rather than the minister's personal residence. They also stated that only Habila and another occupant, Anita Baaki, were in the building on the night of the incident.

They further urged the police to engage qualified forensic pathologists and requested that Habila's remains not be released until all forensic examinations and investigative procedures have been completed.

According to the legal representatives, delaying the release of the body until the autopsy is concluded would help preserve evidence, reduce speculation, and ensure that the final findings are based on scientific evidence.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mary Habila's death are ongoing, and authorities have not yet released any official findings.
