PRESIDENCY ACCUSES ATIKU OF UNDERMINING NIGERIA OVER ALLEGED US LOBBYING AGAINST TINUBU


The Presidency has criticised former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over reports that his lobbying group in the United States submitted petitions to President Donald Trump and the U.S. State Department concerning President Bola Tinubu's 1993 civil forfeiture case.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described the reported move as an affront to Nigeria's sovereignty and an attempt to internationalise domestic political issues.

According to the statement, the 1993 civil forfeiture matter involving President Tinubu was resolved more than three decades ago and did not result in any criminal conviction or finding of guilt.

The Presidency argued that reviving the issue through foreign lobbyists was inappropriate, noting that the matter had already been addressed through Nigeria's electoral and judicial processes.

"It is baffling and disappointing that someone who has sought the presidency for over three decades now resorts to reporting the President of Nigeria to the President of another country," the statement said.

It added that Nigerians had settled the issue through the 2023 presidential election and subsequent Supreme Court judgment, insisting that those decisions remain valid.

The statement also referenced previous reports concerning Atiku Abubakar's alleged legal controversies in the United States, including claims linked to a U.S. Senate investigation and the William Jefferson bribery case. The Presidency further alleged that Atiku should clarify questions regarding his own legal standing in the United States.

In addition, the Presidency criticised the privatisation programme carried out during Atiku's tenure as Vice President under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, alleging that it led to the sale of national assets at undervalued prices and contributed to job losses and unpaid pensions.

The statement concluded that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing his administration's Renewed Hope Agenda, including economic reforms, investment promotion and improving national security, adding that he would not be distracted by political opposition.

As of the time of filing this report, Atiku Abubakar had not publicly responded to the Presidency's latest allegations.
