ENGLISH FA STANDS BY TUCHEL AFTER WORLD CUP SEMI-FINAL HEARTBREAK


The English Football Association (FA) has reaffirmed its confidence in England head coach Thomas Tuchel despite the Three Lions' 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

England's hopes of reaching their first men's World Cup final since their historic triumph in 1966 ended after Argentina overturned an early English lead with two late goals to secure a place in the final against Spain.

Although Tuchel faced criticism over his tactical changes during the closing stages of the match, the FA has made it clear that the German manager retains its full backing and is expected to remain in charge through UEFA Euro 2028.

Tuchel, who took over as England manager in January 2025, signed a two-year contract extension in February. His long-term mandate includes leading England into Euro 2028, which will be jointly hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

Reacting to the defeat, FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham praised the team's effort throughout the tournament.

"It is heartbreaking to be so close. The players and Thomas gave it everything today, and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament," Bullingham said.

"I would like to thank them all, and also give my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful fans here in the USA and at home."

England will now face France in Saturday's third-place play-off. A victory would secure the nation's best World Cup finish since lifting the trophy in 1966.

Speaking after the semi-final loss, Tuchel expressed disappointment but reaffirmed his commitment to the national team.

"We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros," he said.

"I'm looking forward to that even though right now it's difficult to look that far ahead."

The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager acknowledged that reaching the semi-finals remains a notable achievement, despite the disappointment of missing out on the final.

The FA is expected to view England's run to the last four as a positive step under Tuchel as preparations begin for Euro 2028 on home soil.
