SUSPECTED ARMED HERDERS ATTACK BENUE COMMUNITY, ONE INJURED AS SHOPS ARE LOOTED


A suspected armed herders' attack has left one person injured and several shops looted in Ankpechi community, Oglewu Ward of Ohimini Local Government Area, Benue State.

According to local sources, the attack occurred between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, when armed men reportedly invaded the community, fired sporadically, and forced residents to flee for safety.

A resident, identified as Elijah, said the attackers stormed the area in large numbers, creating panic before targeting provision stores and carting away food items and other goods.

One resident was reportedly struck by a bullet during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

The Chairman of Ohimini Local Government Area, Gabriel Adole, confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers shot one person before breaking into shops and looting supplies.

According to the chairman, the nature of the attack suggests the assailants were seeking food and other essential items, noting that security agencies have since deployed additional personnel to the affected community.

The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, could not be reached for official comments as of the time of filing this report.

The latest incident comes just days after attacks on Otukpo-Nobi and Ondo communities in Otukpo Local Government Area, where several people were reportedly killed.

The recurring violence in parts of Benue State has heightened security concerns, with some residents linking the attacks to tensions following the killing of Ardo Risku Mohammed, the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), although the association has previously distanced itself from the recent attacks.

Security agencies have continued efforts to restore calm in the affected communities while investigations into the latest incident are ongoing.
