HEALTH WORKERS SUSPEND 84-DAY STRIKE AFTER FEDERAL INTERVENTION


6TH FEBRUARY, 2026 | ABUJA – The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has suspended its 84-day nationwide strike, which had paralysed activities in government hospitals and disrupted medical services across Nigeria.

The announcement was confirmed by JOHESU National President Kabir Minjibir, who told PUNCH online:

“The strike has been suspended.”

The suspension follows a last-minute intervention by the Federal Ministry of Labour on Thursday night, aimed at resolving the prolonged industrial action.

The strike, which began 84 days ago, had left patients stranded and forced many to seek treatment in private healthcare facilities. JOHESU, representing health professionals in pharmacies, laboratories, and other support departments, had demanded the implementation of the Technical Committee’s report on CONHESS adjustments, submitted to the Federal Government in 2021.

The industrial action also prompted a 14-day ultimatum by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), issued in solidarity with the health workers.

Further details on the resolution of the strike are expected in the coming days.
