ONDO TOWN TO BENEFIT AS STATE GOVERNMENT BEGINS EMERGENCY DRAINAGE REHABILITATION TO CURB FLOODING


The Ondo State Government has commenced the immediate channelisation and rehabilitation of critical waterways and drainage corridors in Ondo Town (Ondo West Local Government Area) following recent flooding that affected parts of the state.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, disclosed that he led a team of engineers and technical experts to the affected area to begin the intervention in line with the directive of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

According to the commissioner, the exercise is aimed not only at addressing the immediate impact of the flooding but also at preventing future occurrences through comprehensive drainage improvement and waterway restoration.

He explained that the ongoing intervention includes identifying flood-prone locations, mapping critical watercourses, removing obstructions, restoring blocked drainage channels, and improving the capacity of waterways to safely convey stormwater.

Dr. Loko stated that the government's objective is to reduce the risk of recurring floods and build more resilient communities across Ondo State. He added that although the exercise has commenced in Ondo Town, similar flood-control and drainage rehabilitation projects will be extended to other affected communities across the state.

He noted that the deployment of heavy equipment, technical personnel, and engineering expertise demonstrates the government's determination to provide sustainable solutions to flooding challenges.




The commissioner also urged residents to support government efforts by avoiding activities that obstruct drainage systems.

He appealed to the public to refrain from erecting structures, cultivating crops, or dumping refuse within waterways, drainage setbacks, gutters, and stormwater channels, warning that such practices reduce the capacity of drainage infrastructure and increase the likelihood of flooding.

Dr. Loko reaffirmed the state's commitment to working with communities and relevant stakeholders to strengthen drainage infrastructure, safeguard lives and property, and promote a safer and more flood-resilient Ondo State.
