ONLY SIX GOALKEEPERS HAVE SCORED IN PREMIER LEAGUE HISTORY
Scoring goals is traditionally the responsibility of outfield players, making goals by goalkeepers one of the rarest achievements in football. Since the Premier League was established in 1992, only six goalkeepers have found the back of the net.
The first goalkeeper to achieve the feat was Danish legend Peter Schmeichel, who scored for Aston Villa against Everton in October 2001. Although Aston Villa lost the match 3-2, Schmeichel made history as the first goalkeeper to score in the Premier League.
In February 2004, Brad Friedel joined the exclusive list after scoring for Blackburn Rovers against Charlton Athletic. His late goal, however, was not enough to prevent Blackburn from suffering a 3-2 defeat.
Paul Robinson became the third goalkeeper to score in the competition in 2007. The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper netted with a long free-kick that bounced over Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Everton's Tim Howard made history in January 2012 when his powerful clearance, aided by windy conditions, bounced over Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Ádám Bogdán and into the net. Howard chose not to celebrate the goal out of respect for his fellow goalkeeper.
In November 2013, Asmir Begović scored for Stoke City just 13 seconds into a match against Southampton. His long kick travelled the length of the pitch before bouncing over the opposing goalkeeper, making it one of the longest goals ever recorded in professional football.
The most recent goalkeeper to score in the Premier League is Alisson Becker. The Liverpool goalkeeper headed home a dramatic stoppage-time winner against West Bromwich Albion in May 2021, becoming the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to score with a header. The goal played a significant role in Liverpool's qualification for the UEFA Champions League that season.
