TRUTH AND ACCOUNTABILITY MUST REMAIN THE FOUNDATION OF GOVERNANCE


A former Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Ondo State on Special Interest, Apostle Temitope Olowofoyekun Dadeowo, has emphasized the need for truth, integrity, and accountability in governance, warning against what he described as misleading narratives capable of eroding public confidence in government.

In a statement titled "The Price of Political Deception: Why Truth, Integrity, and Accountability Must Guide Governance," Dadeowo argued that politics should remain focused on legitimate leadership, responsible representation, and service to the people rather than personal interests.

According to him, politics and governance are built on the pillars of power, legitimacy, and authority, which should be exercised in ways that promote economic development, responsible leadership, and the welfare of citizens. He expressed concern that personal ambition has increasingly overshadowed these core principles.

Commenting on recent public discussions surrounding the remuneration of political appointees, Dadeowo alleged that some politicians had presented incomplete information about their earnings. He stated that verified records indicate the remuneration package for the category of appointees being discussed comprises a basic salary of ₦315,735, an imprest allowance of ₦150,000, and a fuel allowance of ₦50,000, amounting to a total monthly remuneration of ₦515,735.

He argued that publicly stating only a portion of the remuneration without explaining the complete package could create a misleading impression about the government's compensation structure and potentially undermine public trust.

Dadeowo maintained that public office holders have a responsibility to communicate accurate information, noting that honesty and accountability are essential qualities expected of those serving in government.

He also cautioned against using unverified or incomplete claims to advance political interests or discredit an administration, stressing that criticism should always be based on verifiable facts.

While reaffirming that loyalty to a political party should not prevent constructive criticism, he insisted that political disagreements must be rooted in truth rather than misinformation. He added that public office is a position of trust that requires transparency, integrity, and ethical conduct.

The former gubernatorial aide concluded by urging political office holders to uphold honesty in public communication, describing truth and accountability as indispensable pillars of good governance.
