UNILAG FACES ONLINE CRITICISM OVER SINGER FOLA'S OUTFIT AT FINAL-YEAR PROJECT DEFENCE


The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has come under intense social media scrutiny following the appearance of Nigerian singer Folarin Odunlami, popularly known as Fola, at his final-year project defence in an outfit that sparked widespread debate online.

Photos and videos circulating on social media showed the Afrobeats and Afro-R&B artiste arriving on campus in a Cadillac Escalade dressed in baggy trousers, a shirt, a scarf and accessories for his project defence in the Department of Economics Education, Faculty of Education.

The images generated mixed reactions on X (formerly Twitter), with many users questioning whether the university had overlooked its dress code because of the singer's celebrity status.

Several social media users claimed that other students had previously been denied access to project defence sessions for failing to meet the institution's expected dress standards. However, there has been no official confirmation from UNILAG that Fola violated any dress code or received preferential treatment.

One X user, identified as @Nurse__lyon, said dressing appropriately for a project defence demonstrates respect for the institution.

Another user, @ithought_iwas2, recalled being required to wear a blazer before being allowed to defend a project, while @Inspector_khay1 argued that wealth or fame should not exempt students from observing academic decorum.

Similarly, @iamnotfredrick criticised both the singer and those who reportedly allowed him to proceed, saying every student should be held to the same standard.

Another user, @Inviiin, questioned why preferential treatment should be given to anyone, while @IbimBoyle wondered whether the singer had been treated differently from other students who were reportedly sanctioned for dress code violations.

Reacting to the controversy, @Thepentane_ claimed such an appearance would not have been accepted in some Nigerian universities.

However, not everyone shared the criticism.



Some social media users defended both the university and the singer, arguing that wearing corporate attire is not a compulsory requirement for project defence in many higher institutions, particularly for non-professional courses.

One user, @Damilaredeicon, stated that corporate dressing is not strictly enforced in many universities and suggested that the criticism may be exaggerated.

Some of Fola's classmates also posted photos and videos with the singer after the defence, indicating that he completed the academic exercise without any reported disruption.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the University of Lagos nor Fola had issued an official statement addressing the controversy.

The claims circulating on social media regarding an alleged breach of dress code or preferential treatment remain unverified.
